Bach Flower Remedies and Better Sleep

A few years ago, I personally went through a terrible phase of insomnia and the plethora of health challenges that accompany it. It was not that suddenly I couldn’t sleep. I had many warnings, that I unfortunately chose to ignore. It started by not being able to sleep once in two months or so – tossing and turning all night… then it became once a month, then once a week.

I still thought – it’s nothing. No big deal. Can’t sleep – will browse the net, play a game, get some work done, talk to friends in Europe and America… As I continued ignoring it, and doing nothing about it, the insomnia really started acting up, and I simply couldn’t sleep at night. I had no idea at that time the consequences of little to no sleep would have been so bad.

I used to love sunsets and the onset of night. The mysterious sounds of nocturnal critters, the twinkling stars, the pale cool light of the moon, and the pleasant evening breeze. Then snuggling up into my bed and surrendering myself to sleep to wake up fresh and alert the next day. I remember how I would look forward to night…

With the insomnia, I started dreading sunsets. Night would mean anxiety. As the lights would get switched off and others in the house would go to bed, I would feel abandoned and lost in my own private hell of sleeplessness. I would look at my bed and think – oh no – not one more night of torture.

The quality of my life deteriorated. I simply didn’t have the energy or focus I required to do things I loved most. I was hardly teaching any Art of Living courses. Rarely playing the piano. Had no interest in cooking or eating good food. I was generally irritable, chronically tired and supremely frustrated.

Then, just as I thought, it cannot get any worse, it did. I developed full blown panic and anxiety attacks. I still shudder when I think of this – and spare you the description of those horrific hours here. I just want to say this to whoever is reading this if you are going through this, I totally feel your pain and your anguish. And I want to say too that there is a happy ending. I managed to reclaim my sleep naturally, without resorting to any sort of allopathic intervention – I was lucky to have a doctor who told me that she wouldn’t give me any pills. She said – You know how to fix yourself. Do it.

I did it. You can do it too.

As I started sleeping well again, I regained my health. My customary good sense of humour made a comeback and I fell in love with life all over again.

It was then that Dinesh and I decided to write a book on my journey through the hell of Insomnia and back – that book is called Sleep Your Way to Success – You can get the Audiobook exquisitely narrated by Dinesh by clicking on this link.

Meditation was the most important thing I did throughout that time. Meditation and Sudarshan Kriya were my life line and kept me sane – I still zealously do them every single day.

Besides meditating, I exercised, changed my diet and in general made healthier lifestyle choices. I used the Bach Flower Remedies and in many ways these profoundly effective remedies played a critical part in my recovery. In the book, we talk about all I did, but there is a just a passing reference to the Bach Flower Remedies. Let’s talk a bit about how the gentle power of these amazing remedies played a critical role in my journey back to health.

What are the Bach Flower Remedies?

The Bach Flower Remedies are a natural form of alternative medicine that was developed by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930s. The remedies are made from infusions of certain flowers and are used to treat a variety of emotional and physical problems. There are 38 different remedies in total, each of which is designed to target a specific issue. For example, there is a remedy for fear, another for anxiety, and another for grief. The 38 remedies in their permutations and combinations can handle more than 2 million states of mind!

How do the Bach Flower Remedies work?

The theory behind the Bach Flower Remedies is that our emotions play a big role in our physical health. Negative emotions can lead to very physical problems. The remedies are designed to target these negative emotions, resolve them and help us feel more balanced.
